Suzlon Secures 378 MW Wind Energy Project from NTPC: A Major Leap Towards India’s Green Energy Goals

In a significant boost to India’s renewable energy sector, Suzlon Group, one of the country’s leading renewable energy solutions providers, has secured a major order of 378 MW from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited – India’s largest power generation company.

The project, which marks another milestone in Suzlon’s ongoing collaboration with NTPC, is part of NTPC REL’s broader strategy to meet its green energy targets in alignment with India’s ambitious net-zero emissions goal by 2070. The awarded capacity will be installed in Gujarat, one of India’s most wind-rich states, and is expected to be commissioned in stages over the next 18–24 months.

Details of the Project

According to Suzlon’s official announcement, the contract involves the supply, installation, and commissioning of NTPC REL’s 3 MW Series wind turbines, which are among Suzlon’s newest and most efficient turbines. These turbines come with a hybrid lattice tubular (HLT) tower and a 144-meter rotor diameter, designed to harness wind energy more efficiently even in low-wind zones.

Under the agreement, Suzlon will supply 126 wind turbine generators (WTGs), each with a capacity of 3 MW. Along with the turbine supply and commissioning, Suzlon will also be responsible for executing the project infrastructure, including the foundation and electrical network.

In addition, the company will provide comprehensive operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the project post-commissioning, ensuring long-term efficiency and output optimization.

Expected Impact and Benefits

The 378 MW wind project is expected to generate approximately 1,022 million units (MUs) of clean energy annually, enough to power around 3.4 lakh households and offset over 9.3 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. This is equivalent to planting over 1.5 crore trees annually, making it a major contributor to the country’s carbon reduction goals.

By deploying advanced wind technology in Gujarat, this project will not only help NTPC diversify its green energy portfolio but also strengthen Suzlon’s market position as a key player in India’s wind energy landscape.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Girish Tanti, Vice Chairman of Suzlon Group, expressed his enthusiasm:

“We are honored to receive this repeat order from NTPC, a true validation of our long-standing relationship and the trust they place in Suzlon’s technology and project execution capabilities. This project also underscores the crucial role wind energy plays in India’s clean energy transition.”

Tanti added that the new 3 MW turbines offer higher energy yield and better economics for customers. “With our vertically integrated operations, in-house R&D, and domestic manufacturing, we are proud to contribute to the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.”

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd, on their part, emphasized the importance of accelerating renewable energy adoption. A senior official stated:

“This project is a step forward in our journey to meet the Government of India’s renewable energy targets. We are confident that our partnership with Suzlon will deliver a high-performance wind project that sets new benchmarks for reliability and sustainability.”

Why This Matters: India’s Wind Energy Push

India is currently the fourth-largest wind power market in the world, with an installed capacity exceeding 45 GW as of early 2025. However, the country still has a long road ahead to meet its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, as declared under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.

Wind energy, especially from onshore farms like the one being developed in Gujarat, is seen as one of the most viable ways to meet these targets due to its cost-effectiveness and quick deployment timelines.

Projects like this 378 MW order contribute directly to:

  • Reducing India’s dependence on coal-fired electricity
  • Creating green jobs in engineering, manufacturing, construction, and O&M
  • Fostering local economies, especially in rural or semi-rural areas
  • Decreasing air pollution and improving public health
  • Strengthening India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy deployment

Suzlon’s Journey and Commitment

Suzlon Group has long been a pioneer in India’s wind energy journey. With over 20 GW of wind energy capacity installed across 17 countries, including over 13 GW in India, Suzlon remains one of the most recognized names in clean energy.

The company’s vertically integrated model — from design to manufacturing to project execution and O&M — gives it a strategic edge. It operates several manufacturing units across India, with major facilities in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.

Despite facing financial headwinds in the past, Suzlon’s recent revival, marked by a focus on cutting-edge technology, financial restructuring, and partnerships with large entities like NTPC, signals a strong comeback.

Looking Ahead

As climate change continues to accelerate, and the demand for sustainable energy sources grows, partnerships like the one between NTPC and Suzlon are essential. They not only reinforce India’s green commitment but also demonstrate how public-private collaborations can deliver impactful solutions for the future.

With this project, NTPC REL strengthens its renewable energy portfolio and moves closer to achieving its target of 60 GW renewable capacity by 2032. Meanwhile, Suzlon solidifies its place as a trusted partner in India’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
